What’s New in North Lake Tahoe Winter 2022/2023
New offerings at ski resorts and exciting events
NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev., Dec. 13, 2022 – North Lake Tahoe is the premier winter sports destination, home to the largest concentration of ski resorts in North America. With some of the earliest ski resort openings in recent years, this winter is shaping up to be one of the best seasons, delivering a phenomenal snowpack with every storm. Among winter activities, events are back in full force, a new restaurant is opening and there is new lodging on the horizon. Here’s what else to expect in North Lake Tahoe this winter.
Ski Resort Updates:
- Palisades Tahoe is launching their new base-to-base gondola Dec. 17 and expanding their Mountaineer shuttle service with free on-demand shuttling through April 9. The resort is now accepting Apple Pay and tap pay, as well as utilizing photo recognition technology at some food and beverage stations.
- Diamond Peak launched a new website and group lessons are now available to book online. The resort recently installed Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) access gates at the Lodgepole, Lakeview, School House, and Crystal Express chairlifts to provide hand and touch-free convenience. The Diamond Peak’s Village Terrain Park moved to the Spillway run to allow riders to experience each feature in the park. A new magic carpet style surface lift will help children three to six-years-old learn how to use their equipment, stop, and make their first turns in a more efficient and reliable way. The resort also has new glade skiing zones with advanced terrain filled with natural obstacles like pillows, rock drops and more.
- Northstar has a new signature restaurant called Wild Pine. The menu will be centered around comfort food including rotisserie cooked chicken and tri tip, among other food items and will be open for lunch and dinner.
- Boreal added a new indoor wooden skate bowl and an indoor parkour zone this season, along with additional parking at Soda Springs. A Mountain Adventure ticket is perfect for non-skiers or new-to-snow families and includes entry to Planet Kids, Tube Town, Woodward Start Park, a terrain-based learning area, and “sleigh” rides, a ride on their snow Jeep.
- Tahoe XC had their earliest open ever this year on Nov. 10. Skiing is free for children 19-years-old and under and anyone over the age of 70. For less than $100, you can purchase a lesson and rental. On Tuesdays, a day pass is just $29.
- Rose Ski Tahoe now has two high speed chairs leaving the main lodge and has made several improvements to trails.The new Lakeside Trail is now open leading to the Around the World trail which now offers a new off-shoot giving this trail a new dimension. Mt. Rose offers Two‘fer Tuesdays with two for one lift tickets, Ladies Day with $69 lift tickets for women, and SKI G.I.F. with $59 lift tickets after 12 p.m. on Fridays. All daily specials exclude holiday periods. There is also live music most Fridays and Saturdays.
- Tahoe Donner has snow play Friday, Saturday and holidays, including tubing and sled lanes. A new TD Eats trailer offers sweet treats like donuts, popcorn, candy, hot chocolate and coffee. With almost 100 instructors to teach people how to ski, it remains a great place to learn the winter sport.
Upcoming Events:
- The base-to-base gondola at Palisades Tahoe opens Dec. 17 with a big celebration, including free mountain tours by The North Face Mountain Guides, live music including DJ Dillon Frances and fireworks. The Alpine Lodge and The Village at Palisades Tahoe will now be connected by a 16-minute ride across stunning views of the Sierras and Lake Tahoe.
- Granlibakken is hosting their Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade on Dec. 24 at 5 p.m. for free. Santa and his elves will arrive on a Sno-Cat and skiers with torches will ski down to music.
- Incline Village & Crystal Bay will host its Northern Lights Festivaluntil Dec. 31 with family-friendly events celebrating Christmas and Hannukah.
- Tahoe XC is going “old skool” on Jan. 14 to 16, with a single groomed, classic track racecourse on a 5 km and 10 km loop. Participants are asked to dress “old skool,” too. The event is a fundraiser for Tahoe Cross-Country Ski Education Association.
- The Burton Mystery Tour is Jan. 21 at Boreal with a banked slalom format that is inclusive of all skill levels. The focus is community and good times and hopes to encourage the next generation of riders as they ride alongside pro athletes.
- The Beyond the Boundaries all woman snowboard camp at Boreal is 27 to 29.
- On Feb. 3, Diamond Peak will host the 13th annual Ullr Fest Parade and Community Party to raise funds for the Diamond Peak Ski Team. The evening will include a torchlight parade, bonfire, music, raffles, food, drinks and more.
- Tahoe XC is hosting the She Bowl Laser Biathlon Relay, formerly known as the Shooter Bowl, on Feb. 12. Geared toward woman, the relay is a freestyle race that utilizes laser guns and is a fundraiser for Tahoe Cross-Country Ski Education Association.
- President’s Day weekend, Feb. 18 to 20, Tahoe XC will hold a retail sale of up to 50% off brands like Salomon, Skida, Hestra, Wild Rye, Craft, Bjorn, Daehlie, Cotopaxi and more.
- The 2023 Ski World Cup is at Palisades Tahoe Feb. 24 to 26. One of only four U.S. resorts featured on the World Cup circuit this year, Palisades Tahoe will host men’s slalom and giant slalom events.
- SnowFest returns for the 41st year Feb. 24 to March 5. Activities include a polar bear swim, milk jug curling, a parade and fireworks.
- This year’s Alpenglow 10K and 20K race will happen at Tahoe XC on Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. Alpenglow Sports in Tahoe City will award prizes to the top three men and women.
- One of the largest Nordic ski races west of the Mississippi, the Great Ski Race is happening March 5 at Tahoe XC and is 26 km. The event is a fundraiser for the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team.
- The Red Bull Slide-In Tour is March 17 to 19 at Boreal.
New Business:
- Pints & Pies Pizza Company opened in the Boatworks Mall offering pizza and pasta.
- Bowl Incline recently re-opened in Incline Village after a huge renovation complete with a new second story, bowling lanes, an outdoor patio and a new menu. Bowl Incline also offers live music on select nights.
- Hemmings and Jarrett, a home goods store in Tahoe City, just reopened in Cobblestone Mall after closing in early 2022.
- The home of the former Biltmore will soon be a Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The Hilton owned property plans to open in 2027.
New Tours and Activities:
- Tahoe Adventure Company has a full moon snowshoe adventure that happens every month on the full moon. As the moon rises over the Sierra and illuminates the path, learn fascinating facts about Tahoe’s ecology and the moon.
- Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park operates rain, snow or shine with ten different courses for a fun winter alternative to skiing or snowboarding.
Transportation Updates:
- TART Connect is operating winter hours in five zones until April 9. The free, on-demand shuttle service is available year-round, serving different zones depending on the season. A park and ride option is available until March 19.
