Where to Go
If you’re looking to explore North Lake Tahoe on wheels, any local will tell you that the best part about driving in this area are the spectacular views at every turn. Below are a couple of suggestions on where to go for the best perspectives.
From Tahoe City, drive South on Hwy 89 along the West Shore all the way down to Emerald Bay, where you will be privy to one of the most majestic views of the Lake and surrounding mountains. Although the views are amazing, be sure to keep your eyes on the road, as narrow switchbacks and one cliff section with no guard rails make this a challenge as well as a thrill.
From Incline Village, continue East on Hwy 28 towards South Lake Tahoe. You will pass Sand Harbor and then through Cave Rock, one of the Lake’s most intriguing natural formations. Watch out for pedestrians and bicycles through the cave. This is a great drive to take at sunset, as the view of the mountains and setting sun from the East Shore is utterly unbeatable.
